Isabelle "Sally" Flowers

December 5, 1923 — July 28, 2021

Houston

Isabelle “Sally” Poynter Flowers passed away on Wednesday, July 28, 2021. She was born on December 5, 1923 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma to Edith Lucile Evans and Robert “Yancy” Yantis Evans. She was the sixth of seven children: Evan Evans, Elinor Evans, Paul Evans, Donald Evans, Dale Evans, and Roberta Wilson. She married her childhood friend and neighbor Melvin Lamar Flowers on January 1, 1946. Sally and Mel moved all across the country thanks in part to his service in the Air Force, ultimately settling in Houston, MO. They had three children: Robert “Bob” Flowers, Dale Flowers, and Susan Merka; four grandchildren: Krista Culbertson, Aimee Campbell, Sally Flowers, and Susan Flowers; and seven great grandchildren: Mack Campbell, Katelyn Campbell, Aaron Runion, Blake Runion, Kai Flowers, KC Culbertson, and Kinlea Culbertson. Over the years many cats, and the occasional dog, also called the Flower’s residence home.

Ever the consummate homemaker, Sally delighted in collecting recipes of the local cuisine from the various states they lived in, from California to Louisiana and Maryland to Missouri. Her lovingly dressed dining room table was always ready for a guest- friend, family, or church member. You could always tell you were in for a wonderful meal even before you stepped through the door as the aroma escaped onto the carport.  She was never far from her smartly organized sewing room where every item had a neatly written, hand-labeled home. She could be found expertly following a pattern for clothing items for her grandchildren or creating a freestyle quilted masterpiece for a loved one. Her knowledge of birds was astounding, and she could identify every variety in her yard, be it by song, sight, or stray feather. Her voracious love of words made her an impressive Scrabble competitor. That love of words made her an expert letter writer. She had a knack for capturing a moment in time much like an artist might paint a canvas. Sally and Mel were active members of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Houston, MO for many years. Her strong sense of faith guided her throughout her long life.

A private service will be held at Bradford Funeral Home in Summersville, MO on Saturday afternoon, August 7, 2021. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ozark Rivers Audubon Chapter and Nature Center in Rolla, MO. https://ozarkriversaudubon.org/support/
