On Sunday, August 1, 2021, Jimmie (Jim) Edward Burks Sr. a loving husband, father, and grandfather passed away at the age of 78. Jim was born February 3, 1943, in Hattie, Missouri to Henry Alpha “Alf” Burks and Mabel Lula (Payne) Burks. On April 14, 1967, he married Kathleen (Kay) Rutledge and to that union two sons were born, Jimmie Edward (Jim Ed) Burks Jr. and Jeremy Shaun Burks.
Jim was a devout Christian who shared his love of the Lord with everyone he met. His family meant the world to him. He loved his wife Kay of 52 years, always taking care of her no matter the circumstance. Jim learned the value of hard work, sacrifice and honesty from his father and he taught his sons those same values. Jim spent most of his adult years working in timber, sawmilling and cattle. He took Jim Ed with him as much as he could from the age of two years old. They worked together, rarely apart throughout his life. Jim instilled an interest in history and politics in Jeremy Shaun from a very early age. He always told you the truth, whether or not it was what you wanted to hear. He had total faith in his son's abilities. He was a proud father, a great mentor, always consistent, encouraging and loving. After retirement Jim was able to spend most of his time with his pride and joy, his granddaughter Jenna Michelle Burks. From birth they were inseparable best friends. Jim never met a stranger, had many good friends. He enjoyed telling stories and loved to laugh. He was a very happy man. If you couldn’t remember something, just ask him, his memory and knowledge about so many things was amazing. He was a member of the Pentecostal Church of God and enjoyed going to singings at many area churches whenever possible. He believed that family came first and was always offering a helping hand. We are grateful for the time we were able to spend with him and take comfort knowing that he is now with the Lord.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents Alf and Mabel Burks, wife Kathleen (Kay) Burks, siblings Harry Everett Burks, Thurlo Burks, Earl Burks, Dorothy Burks, Raymond Burks, Eva Burks, Ralph Burks, Irene (Burks) Mattison, Thurman Burks, and Jackie Dean Burks.
He is survived by his sons Jimmie Edward (Jim Ed) Burks Jr. and Jeremy Shaun Burks, granddaughter Jenna Michelle Burks, siblings Reba (Burks) Leigh, Ruth (Burks) Hightower, Iva (Burks) Mattison, Bonnie (Burks) Carter, Erma (Burks) Cassidy, Alvin Burks, Linda Sue (Burks) Rose, and Wilbur Burks, and a host of nieces and nephews.
