Rosa Faye (Cook) Collins, born July 28, 1932 in Perryton, Texas, departed this life on March 21, 2020 in Buffalo, Missouri, at 87 years of age.
Rosa grew up in Texas but as a teenager moved with her parents and five younger sisters to Tyrone, Missouri, where she captured Art Shriver’s heart. They were married from 1948 until his death in 1968. They owned the Tyrone General Store across the street from their home and raised three children, Jimmie, Brenda, and Ronnie.
Rosa received her cosmetology license in 1969 and ran a shop in her home. She fixed a lot of bad mom haircuts in her life! In 1971, she married Gene Harmon and they had a daughter, Opal. Rosa drove a school bus for the Summersville School District for many years. The kids had no trouble hearing her in the very back row! She prided herself on always being on time to the bus stops.
Rosa and Gene sold her home and moved to Mississippi where Gene died in 1993. She returned to Tyrone in 1996. In 1997, she married Junior Collins. They lived in Willow Springs, Missouri, until his death in 2001. The last several years of her life were spent in Tunas, Missouri, being doted on by Brenda.
Rosa became a Christian as a teenager and loved Jesus. She was a doer and was at her happiest when she was taking care of people. Rosa was an overcomer. She lived through and accomplished more during her life than some people could achieve in two lifetimes. Even after the death of three husbands and two sons, her faith in Jesus never wavered.
Rosa was bossy. She was a leader and she knew it (so it’s a good thing she loved Jesus). She was a strong woman and liked people, particularly her sisters, to do what she told them. They might have railed against her, but she always got them in line with sternness and love. She said many times that her sisters were her best friends.
Rosa loved to cook, read, sew, sing and play piano. She was the music leader of Tyrone Freewill Baptist Church for many years. Her homemade bread was second to none! She loved to travel and was always ready to throw her bag in the car and go (so long as she could drive). The family will never forget the trip when Rosa drove her mom and sisters from Missouri to South Carolina (via Texas and Alabama) to see the ocean.
Rosa was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Opal Cook, her husbands, Art Shriver, Gene Harmon, and Junior Collins, and her sons, Jimmie Shriver and Ronnie Shriver. She is survived by her daughters, Brenda (Bill) Dampier and Opal Miller, her grandchildren from her son Jimmie, Angela Vochatzer and Cherity (Dale) Porter, her grandchildren from her daughter Brenda, Rob (Amanda) Young and Jared (Jennifer) Young, and her grandchildren from her son Ronnie, Travis (Shayna) Shriver and Desirea Shriver, and her six younger sisters, Yvonne Bradford, Bea (Chloe) Pitts, Jerry Miller, Pat (Buddy) Hand, Mary Shipley, and Connie (Ed) Jones, 13 great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
We know she was greeted by Jesus saying, “Well done my good and faithful servant.” Then she probably went to whip the choir into shape and teach the angels how to sing four-part harmony.
